Ghatak commandos are special operations, infantry platoons. Every infantry battalion has one special platoon that is most fit physically and mentally.

Every battalion in the Indian Army has a special unit that is very capable is also known as the Ghatak Commandos. They go through special training.

There are 20 commandos in the Ghatak Force. There is one commanding officer, 2 non-commission officers, snipers, light machine gunners,  medic, and assault soldiers.

Only the most motivated and physically fit soldiers are selected for the Ghatak commando training.

Not everyone makes the cut to become the elite Ghatak commandos. The selection process requires an individual to be both physically and mentally motivated.

Training is very harsh as they will go through high altitude training, jungle warfare training, rock climbing, and close quarter battle. A Ghatak commando can easily speed march to 60kms with his full gear.

Ghatak commandos can climb rocks, are trained in jungle warfare and have many similar capabilities. During the Kargil War, Ghatak Commandos helped Indian Army take back control of the Tiger Hill.

Ghatak Commandos are armed with INSAS Assault Rifles, AKM Assault Rifles, Pika General Purpose Machine Gun, M4 Carbine, B&T MP9 Submachine Gun, TAR-21 Assault Rifles, etc. Night vision and kevlar suit is also the part of their gear.

Every commando has to pass all the scenarios in order to become part of Ghatak Platoon.

Every part of the training needs to be cleared in order to become the Ghatak commando. If you fail any of the tests you will not be selected.

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was a Ghatak Commando. He was awarded the highest gallantry award Param Vir Chakra for his actions on Tiger Hill during Kargil War.

Lt Navdeep Singh was also a Ghatak Commando and he was awarded Ashok Chakra for his operation on 15 terrorists.

Lt. Balwan Singh was part of the Ghatak Platoon that was tasked with recapturing the tiger hill. He killed the enemy with close-range battle and hand to hand combat. Blawan Singh was the soldier who hoisted the tricolor on tiger hill.
